I’ve put together a test publication on Medium. If you’d like to give it a try, leave your medium username as a comment on this post or as a comment on the first Medium post.
I had been working on a Wordpress version for a while, but I’d like to give Medium a try. It has a lot of the social features of Kinja and a similar layout of the base page. However, it doesn’t complain about pictures. I’m not going to pretend to have all the answers since I’m new to the platform as well, but it seems decent.
This post contains some images without proper rights.
NOT ON MEDIUM!
Having said all of this, Medium has some rules and I added a couple. It’s worthy of discussion but something we realized on the Oppo Discord is that politics are a rat hole. Thing got way better when we put them in The Cigar Lounge and kept them out of the normal channel.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Oh, why medium?
also I think “Oppositelock” is trademarked... so moving around is gonna involve the approval of whoever owns the trademark.
I think my BMW 420D review and the 993 review were pretty good. I even re-wrote some of my reviews for Drivetribe. But everything else I post is pretty much trash so... :p

As a platform, it’s not going anywhere. They also legitimately care about writing. I think it also provides a fulfillment of a promise that Kinja no longer does: to allow new writers to grow.
Oppo Kinja did help a few writers end up at Jalopnik, but let’s face it, Jalopnik as we know it is dead and it’s every person for themselves. Medium brings a little of that promise back on a meta level. Also, if people choose, they can get some nickels for their content.
Drivetribe, to me, is kind of a contraction of the car world to one shitposting location, haha.

Drivetribe still has the wonky terms and conditions right

It’s hard to make a buck on Medium... you have to be
really
active to make it happen, I’m talking advertising
our content
using some sort of SEO algorithm. But
I think it’s a good, nobel
effort on your side, You’ve always been quite proactive on the kinjapocalipse.
Maybe what I write is not very useful, but if you wish to repost it there, feel free to do so. :)
As for drivetribe... meh I’ve gotten a bit bored lately so I’ve re-written some reviews, and I also translated some stuff (But that’s on cigar lounge)

Hah, yeah, that’s why I said a nickel :)
Much appreciated ;)

Soo many Opposite locks Im spinning outta control here.
There’s like 5 of them now?
![]() 07/28/2020 at 19:46 |

Yeah, I guess that makes 5. Choose your flavor.

........” Oppo Discord”.......you say?

There you go.

Seems like Medium is more for actual reviews and stories whereas Oppositel ock is just for shooting the bull. I’m down. I’m leaving a comment there now in case I ever want to review something.

Cool. Just added you.
Yeah, it’s definitely better for long form content.

I appreciate your work on this. I’m here on OPPO for the community, so I’ll go where the community goes. If they stay here on Kinja, I’ll be here, if the vast majority head to another platform, I’ll follow.

How I actually write/post the content. I was taking a peak around and I saw that I can create new stories but it doesn’t let me post them under the Oppositelock subsection or division of the site. I’m probably missing something, Medium is brand new to me.

“ Always use the Oxford comma unless you’re going for comedic intent. For example: “The VW Vanagon was full of crazy people, me and my friends” is comedic intent with the missing comma.”
O
h HELL no. Every publication I write for is AP Style, and therefore, the Oxford comma can GTFAC unless it’s needed for clarity.
(I don’t have a Medium account and my stance on Miatas is well-known to be
rather negative, so I’ll probably wait for the herbpocalypse to sign up. This does seem like a good platform, though.)

That little Oppositelock symbol isn’t next to my profile picture like it is yours. I have nothing to click, so I don’t know if I have to accept something or if I’m just dense.
Do I have to become a member? That’s 5 dollars a month which isn’t steep but isn’t ideal.
![]() 07/29/2020 at 21:36 |
|
Nope, you don’t need to become a member. You don’t get the little logo when you’re on the link that I sent? For me, I only get the little oppo logo if I’m on the Oppo page. I’m still learning Medium myself.
The other way to do it is to start a new story under your profile then point it to a publication.

Neither of those work. I think you’re the only one with access to your publication. How odd. I’ll keep troubleshooting this with you until we figure out what’s going on.

Give it another try. I think I may have made a rookie error and not saved the page when I added you!

Bingo! That did the trick. Glad you figured it out.
